As a result of increased globalization, enhanced competition and rising customer expectations, today’s businesses face more complexity and uncertainty than ever before. This has intensified the need for coordination among interdependent organisations and has created the awareness that it is no longer companies but supply chains that compete. In this process, more and more companies are realising that they need to optimise not only the materials and information flows in their supply chains, but also the financial flows. Such organizations acknowledge that improving the supply and demand of finance is an effective way to increase the profitability and stability of supply chains. In recent decades, this has led to the development of a new field of research and application: supply chain finance (SCF).
